International students in Italy: what changes in the top 20

International students matriculations to the Italian university system grew 7.08 % from AY 2018/2019 to AY 2019/2020, the Italian Ministry of University reports. The total number of first-year students grew from 15,555 to 16,740, i.e. 1.850 international students more.

Romanian freshers grew by 8,14%, thus retaining the first spot as newly matriculated students. Albanian students maintained the second position. And Chinese students the third.

So what is really changing in the top 20 charts?

Basically, the first 20 nationalities listed in 2020 are the same listed in 2019.

China, Morocco, and India, all grew by more than 20%. Israel jumped to the 15th position with an impressive + 41,94%. Egypt, also, grew 29.15%.

So, who lost?

Ukraine went don by 4,91%, Ecuador 16,96, and Cameroon 27,59%.

Substantially, all South American countries lost positions, probably due to the flight restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

All Eurasian countries gained.

North Africa performed quite well, but Central Africa didn’t.

Europe produced mixed results: Germany up, France down, Poland up, Albania basically stable.
