Ca’ Foscari to train 60 Libyan teachers in Italian language
Ca’ Foscari University of Venice will train 60 Lybian teachers who will be involved in the start of Italian language courses in Libyan secondary schools from the next 2022/2023 school year.
The training activities are provided for by the Agreement signed in Tripoli in December 2020, as part of the strengthening of bilateral relations and in the light of the 2008 Treaty of Friendship.
The agreement was signed between the Italian and Libyan Ministries of Education, with the support of their respective Ministries of Foreign Affairs, in close coordination with the Italian Embassy in Tripoli.
The first part of the course began in September 2021 with a series of online learning modules. This activity will now be followed by presence training and internship activities lasting two months. A Joint Committee, composed of representatives of the respective Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Education and the Embassy in Tripoli, will be responsible for drawing up a syllabus for teaching Italian in secondary schools in Libya.
The arrival in Venice of 60 Libyan teachers, who will begin training activities in the presence at the Ca’ Foscari University in conjunction with the opening of the week of the Italian language in the world, marks a step forward to the normalisation of diplomatic relationships between the two countries.
A number of European countries operate similar activities in Africa, as a means to enhance a country’s soft power. For example, France’s President Emmanuel Macron has recently boosted the teaching of the French language in Africa, as a means to “[…] overtake English in Africa, increase its use online and loosen the grip of English on Brussels”.
