Can an algorithm help choosing a such important thing as the right university?
Mr Renato Mazzoncini, CEO of the Italian A2A company analysed the way Italian families choose the university path and had a brilliant idea.
He developed an algorithm to help kids and families choose the proper university course, the newspaper Corriere della Sera reported last October 14th 2020.
The algorithm calculates 9 different parameters, which weight differently according to the (proposed) importance in choosing a course. Thus, “average salary” weights 13%, and “macrotrends” only 5%. The other 7 parameters are: “personal attitude” (30%); “employability” (15%); “unemployment” (15%); “passion for the job” (10%); “number of schoolmates” (5%); “jobs in Italy” (4%); “jobs abroad (3%).
Kids then need to rate 1-10 each parameter, the algorithm will calculate which is the most suitable course (up to 7 different courses can be uploaded).
In Italy, the counselling industry is less developed than elsewhere. For instance, families aren’t keen on appointing agencies, which in turn tend to neglect the internal market.
Each step towards an expansion of technical tools families can make use of during the key period of the choice of the right faculty, should hence be welcomed.
