ALPH students’ number is growing in Italy.
ALPH is an acronym that stands for Art, Literature, Philosophy and History), and it is often juxtaposed to the more widespread STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).
According to the “Osservatorio Talents Venture“, an Italian consulting company, numbers are growing.
In the academic year 2017/2018, some 122,000 students were enrolled in ALPH courses in Italy, 5,000 more than just two years before.
True, the same research highlights that in 2008 that number was 145,483, but still, a clear turnaround is visible.
The single most sought after course seem to be anthropology, with a 22,6% students increase in the last three years photographed by the research.
Conversely, in 2018 the private sector was about recruiting over 10,000 graduated from the same subject areas.
With all probability, the covid-19 pandemic will mess those figures a little bit, but the trend is interesting nonetheless.
As far as employability is concerned, for some HEIs the degree of employability is comparable to STEM courses. Also, ALPH courses usually matriculate more female students than male students, which also is an interesting indicator. In Italy, scientific faculties enrol more male students: female students are only 36% of the total. In ALPH, female students are 65% of the total.
