21 new universities in Morocco

21 new universities in Morocco will be established in the next two years, Morocco World News reports in an article (https://lnkd.in/dR-gHcP) published last January 26th.

According to the piece, “the government aims to create new university institutions aimed at the most talented young Moroccans”. The North African country seeks to increase the number of merit-based institutions

“Delegate Minister Aouicha had been asked to increase the number of merit-based institutions by the Independence and Equivalence Team of Morocco’s upper house of parliament”, MWN reports.

“The parliamentary body had requested that Aouicha increase in particular institutions that require additional tests prior to admission, as well as solid high school grades”.

For that reason, Morocco will set up HEIs that will require additional tests prior to admission, as well as solid high school grades.

What is a piece of fantastic news for the Kindom, may turn out to create problems in international student recruitment by Italian universities.

Moroccan students in fact represent the 9th most numerous cohort in Italian HEIs, i.e. a good 3% of the total.

Yearly, some 2.200 young Moroccans enrol in Italian HEIs. Mostly, they predominantly enrol at a BA level, both in STEM as well as in humanities.

21 new universities in Morocco represent a wide option to choose from first and foremost for young Moroccan students that traditionally emigrate as degree seekers.  The question is then: will Italy will still represent an option for them?
