THE rankings 2022 top Italian HEIs gain positions
Mixed results for the Italian Higher Education system, as portrayed by the THE World University Rankings, out today.
The very good news is in the top 10 positions. Here, 6 HEIs grow, even considerably, whereas 4 lose ground. La Sapienza is up 28, Padua 50, as San Raffaele Milan, the University of Milan, Milan Bicocca, and Brescia. Rome Tor Vergata scores a remarkable +175.
Conversely, Bologna is down 5, Normale Pisa 16, and Sant’Anna, also Pisa, loses 55 positions.
Overall, though, the system as a whole emerges somewhat impoverished. Here’s the snapshot:
| N | % | ||
| UP | 10 | 19% | |
| DOWN | 12 | 23% | |
| STABLE | 27 | 51% | |
| NEW | 4 | 8% | |
| TOT | 53 |
12 HEIs, nearly a quarter of the total, lose ground, vs. 10 up. 27 are stable, and there are 4 new entries.
The new entries are: Camerino, Perugia, Humanitas Milan and Macerata. The latter two are not exactly “ranked”, but are listed in the chart.
As said, it’s the lower part of the chart that does not look exactly healthy. A number of institutions are down since last year. Overall, Italian HEIs gain 728 positions and lose 1,326, the delta being 598 positions.
To sum up, top Italian HEIs perform better in THE ranking if compared to last year’s, with the noticeable exception of our ranked university (Bologna), which loses ground.
