The impact of International Students

The impact of International Students is often underestimated.

Tuition fee payments and in-campus activities represent of course the first expenditure voice of a student.

But beyond that, international students spend money off-campus on a wide range of goods and services.

Transport and retail sectors are immediate beneficiaries of international students’ spending. They heavily contribute to the aviation industry and its beneficiaries.

But international students also invite and attract a numbers of overseas visitors during their studying abroad.

The expenditure of these friends and relatives, at hotels, restaurants, and attractions makes a significant contribution to the economy, too.

Often, though not always, international students come from wealthy families. This may therefore impy that they contribute to the host state’s economy to a greater extent, in percentage, than national students. Exactly as internattional students may have greater spending possibilities.

A StudyPortals 2019 study reports that the impact of International Students is in the order of $300 Billion, with the US topping the chart with direct impact totaling more than $ 26 billion per year, and aggregate economic impact in the order of $ 57 billion.

1. USA 57.307 (millions USD)
2. China 51.093
3. UK 25.485
4. Australia 19.793
5. India 17.781
6. France 14.474
7. Germany 14.428
8. Canada 11.178
9. Netherlands 5.305

Italy is both top source (11th globally) and top destination (12th) of international students: it would be great to learn what their economic impact is in our country.

Maybe the time is ripe for a comprehensive study.
