Sapienza close to the first 100 in ARWU rankings 2022
Mixed results indeed for the Italian university system as a whole in the latest ARWU ranking results, released on August 15, 2022.
The ARWU ranking is released by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, a Shanghai-based fully independent organisation dedicated to research on higher education intelligence and consultation.
ARWU is the most “technical” of the three major rankings (the other two being QS and THE), as it is based on “non-interpretable” data, whose sources, unlike the other two rankings’, are available to anyone c/o ARUW’s or other websites.
The good news comes from Rome’s Sapienza University, which gained some 50 positions and made it in the 101-150 cohort, i.e. the last group before the first 100 in the World. This advancement is primarily a result of the Nobel Prize in Physics that was assigned to Sapienza Giorgio Parisi last year. As Monsuni had (easily) anticipated,
Overall, from 2021 Italy lost one ranked institution, but gained one: therefore the 2022 list is made of 46 HEIs.
But as far as the quality component is concerned, the system lost significant ground.
