QS ranking 2023: few Italian HEIs up, no new entries

QS, the London-based company, has just released its annual rankings.

Sadly, there is no significant news for the Italian university system as a whole. Out of the total 42 Italian HEIs ranked by QS, 23 (i.e., 55%) lost positions, 6 (14%) gained, and 13 (31%) reported the same position as last year’s.

Milan Polytechnic still maintains position # 1 on this particular chart, though losing 3 positions vs. its 2022 performance.

Out of the first 10 HEIs, only the University of Naples – Federico II and the Polytechnic of Turin advance. Sapienza University of Rome maintain last year’s ranking, all the remainder are down.

The only significant come from Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore (+40) and Politecnico di Bari (+130).

Corriere della Sera, Italy’s most important newspaper, on June 22 reported: “The Italian university system is struggling. This is certified by the new international ranking published on June 8, 2022: although Italian universities have never entered the top 100 of the QS world university ranking even in previous editions, this year they even begin to fall back. A dangerous reversal since competition with the Far East is becoming increasingly difficult”.
