Italy increases posts in medicine courses

Italy increases posts in medicine courses. Seats in medicine courses in Italian Universities are traditionally scarce, at least in the perception of students and families.

But the COVID-19 pandemic is changing priorities.

The Italian minister of University, prof. Gaetano Manfredi, in July 2020 announced Italy has increased the number of academic courses in medicine, and consequently the overall number of seats available.

Starting from Academic Year 2020/2021, there will be 10 more courses in medicine, and 1,500 more seats available.

Overall, the available seats for medicine are in the order of 13,000. Students can book the entry test until July, 23rd, and then seat for an examination, which is extremely competitive.

All procedures are available c/o the www.universitaly.it website.

Medicine in Italy is a 6-year, 360 ECTS course. The course is not sub-divided into cycles, as in most other Italian, and European degrees. This means that students acquire one degree only. This also means that students need to attend university for a full 6 years before obtaining a degree. The course, therefore, is highly demanding.

Still, it’s highly requested by international students due to the good average quality of Italian University offering such programs, and the affordable tuition fees (in the order of € 2,500 / year).

Interestingly, a number of Italian Universities are holding their medical degree in English. Applications from international students flock, due to the hight difference in price between Italian and international fees. If Italy increases posts in medicine courses, the higher request by international students will also be satisfied.

Medicine usually grants immediate employability to either public or private structures. In a time where a university degree does not per se grant a job, this factor needs not to be underestimated.
