Studyportals reports a surge in student demand for Italy

A new report from Studyportals examines student demand for English-taught programmes in the European Higher Education Area (EHEA).

The report is based on page views of Studyportal’s online portals, such as Bachelorportal, and Masterportal.

Italy experienced the largest increase in demand (+45.2%) followed by Portugal (+28.6%), and Poland (+28.1%). The trend was already highlighted by Monsuni, via research based on the Italian Ministry of University’s (MUR) official data in 2021.

MUR’s data further show steady growth over the last decade. Since the a.y. 2010/2011, the number of international students has grown continuously, and rapidly. With 4.537 units more, or a full 35.3 %, the performance looks quite remarkable.

Overall, the first-year students in Italy in a.y. 2020/2021 were 327.071. This implies the incidence of foreign students is 5.3%. Not a staggering percentage, but nonetheless a remarkable result for a non-English-speaking country.

Studyportals‘ April 2021 – March 2022 data, vs the previous 12 months, are as follows:

Chart and figures by Studyportals.

“Italy has the highest change in absolute and relative terms for Bachelor’s programmes (up 55.2% in absolute terms) followed by Spain and Belgium. For Master’s programmes, Italy is also leading (up 42.5% in absolute terms), followed by Poland and Portugal”.
