How many universities are there in Italy?

As every marketer knows, the first milestone of each new campaign has to do with the dimensioning of the market.

How many HEIs, how many courses, how many national and international students.

Monsuni has researched the number of the Italian HEIs, including online universities, finding out that… there is not an agreed number.

Almalaurea, the Bologna-based database on university placement (amongst other activities) relies on Universitaly’s numbers. Almalaurea’s website (http://aomobile.almalaurea.it/news/news.aspx?id=11&BACK=1) in June 2021reports 96 HEIs, of which 11 totally online.

Last, the Italian Ministry of Education (MUR), writes about 98 HEIs in total, of which 29 private and 69 public (http://ustat.miur.it/dati/didattica/italia/atenei#tabistituti)

Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_universities_in_Italy) lists 100 universities, 63 of which are public.

Wikipedia offers the following details, too:

63 public universities

3 “non-statal”, public-sponsored universities
